That's just it, Don. But it's one thing to promote that we should take risks and quite another to define what a risk is, in order for it to actually be done. I haven't heard many people define a risk in such a way that actors can actually do something with the knowledge afterwards. This is the danger of telling people to simply 'go with their gut'.

Another one of your thought provoking and well considered posts, Paul. Didn't Mamet also say to the effect in one of his books that audiences will be most beguiled by that actor facing his/her challenges, doing the risky stuff, being counter-intuitive, creating uncertainty....'what will he/she do next?' That's what keeps them in their chairs isn't?

Having done both styles of acting, I've realised both have their virtues and drawbacks. The trouble with technique based forms is that most actors forget the last step - let it go - which is why their performance can seem 'mechanical'. They continue to think about the how and what long after it has served its purpose. An acting coach once told me - "You've done the homework, everything you will need to make this work is already, so just go for it." Instinctive acting is great for screen but can often let you down on a long theatre run. Sometimes you need a few tools at your disposal.

The other thing about child actors is that all though they are instinctive, they are usually guided step by step though their performance by the director. Other than knowing their lines, no one seems to expect a child actor to just go in there and do it - whereas adult actors are expected to be able to come along with something close to a polished performance that just needs guiding by the director.

Excellent post! Absolutely agreed with this so I posted it on FB :)
Also, I would honestly rather have a page made for me by someone I don't know because enough people liked my work and decided to make one about me. That would be much more flattering.
